ES-24-250W is an edge switch whose sales are taken care of by Ubiquiti Networks. It is a mix of Power over Ethernet(PoE) and Gigabit switch. Power over the Ethernet is a technology which uses Ethernet cables to deliver power to network peripherals rather than using separate power chords.
The ES-24-250W claims to provide “intelligent” switching so as to keep up with the growing networks around the globe.
The ES-24-250W offers a blend of the routing capabilities of a Layer 3 router and the switching functionalities of a Layer 2 switch. One important feature of ES-24-250W is that it provides Non-Blocking switching performance with high throughput.
Non-blocking switching, in lay man’s terms, means that N inputs received at one end can be mapped to any of the N outputs. This drastically reduces the number of components needed to design a network and thus minimizes expenditure.
The ES-24-250W can handle data from all the ports at the same time without any loss of packets. This property can be attributed to the high forwarding capacity of the device. Forwarding capacity refers to the number of packets forwarded to the switch layer by a port per second.
The total non-blocking line rate of ES-24-250W is estimated to be around 26 Gbps, which is pretty high as compared to many other switches in the market. It also provides networking and management interfaces to allow the user have an interactive and easy-to-use environment for handling network connections.
This interface has been termed as EdgeSwitch Configuration Interface. This also provides the user with a command line interface, thus facilitating network configuration commands to be given by the user.
Another important feature of ES-24-250W is that it provides link aggregation. Link aggregation literally means bringing together more than one parallel network connection in an attempt to improve throughput. A single line will not be able to achieve this and this also provides a backup in case one of the link fails.
